How wages work in practice
The figures shown are collective agreement minimums - the floor, not the ceiling. At premium resorts (Zermatt, St. Moritz, Kitzbühel, Courchevel, Val d'Isère), employers typically pay 10–25% above the minimum, particularly for kitchen and reception roles.
Switzerland stands out: even at minimum wages, CHF 3,900 gross is roughly €4,000 at current exchange rates - significantly higher than equivalent roles in France or Italy. The trade-off is a higher cost of living, particularly accommodation.
Accommodation included is one of the most important factors when comparing offers. If your employer provides a room and deducts CHF 600/month in Switzerland versus paying €500/month rent privately in a French resort, the Swiss offer is considerably more favourable in net terms.
Tips and service charges are not included in these calculations but can meaningfully increase take-home in restaurant and service roles, particularly in French and Italian resorts where tipping culture is growing.
